Verbal Inflection

Over the next four weeks, we will begin to explore Latin’s verbal system. We will study how verb forms change to reflect changes in function. We will also consider how verbal forms set expectations when it comes to translating sentences.

  • Perfect passive
  • Sentence Type 3: Passive sentences
  • Reading (to be completed before class): Watch Prof. Joseph’s short video on the distinction between the active and passive voice and read Prof. Libatique’s article on why the active-passive distinction still matters today. Additionally, read the short section from our textbook on passive sentence structures.
  • Morphology and Vocabulary (to be completed before class): Memorize the conjugation of the perfect passive indicative in the 3rd person singular and plural as well the next seven dictionary entries for the verbs in the vocabulary list for Module 2 (up to and including video).
  • Practice (to be completed before class): Complete the following exercises on the formation of the perfect passive. Additionally, determine the person, number, tense, voice, mood of the following verbal forms: amaverunt, auditi sunt, and ductae sunt

  • Imperfect active and passive
  • Sentence Type 2: Intransitive sentences
  • Reading (to be completed before class): Rewatch Prof. Smith’s video on the formation of the imperfect as well as my video on sentence structures. Read the sections from our textbook on the imperfect tense as well as the section on intransitive sentence structures.
  • Morphology and Vocabulary (to be completed before class): Memorize the conjugation of the imperfect active and passive in the 3rd person singular and plural as well the dictionary entries for the nouns in the vocabulary list for Module 2.
  • Practice (to be completed before class): Complete the following exercises on the formation of the imperfect.

Week 5

  • Reading (to be completed before class): Read the sections on linking sentence structure and tips for determining sentence structure.
  • Morphology and Vocabulary (to be completed before class): Memorize the imperfect and perfect of the verb sum in 3rd person singular and plural. In addition, memorize the dictionary entries for the adjectives and conjunctions in the vocabulary list for Module 2.
  • Practice (to be completed before class): Complete the exercise from our textbook on sentence structure identification.
